Finale
Session 4 of 4
Sunday, January 30, 2022 • 5:45 PM EST
Instructor: Jason Krug
The Finale music notation software is incredibly flexible and powerful…and fiendishly difficult to master. Whether a complete novice or seasoned veteran, there’s something for every user of Finale in this four-class track. Class 1 focuses on entering notes, expressions, and articulations. Class 2 focuses on using Finale specifically to write for handbells. Class 3 deals with page layout and making the final product look its best. Class 4 is a workshop for attendees to get help with their own Finale conundrums. Participants are encouraged to use their own computers with any version of Finale to follow along! It is strongly recommended that attendees watch the class on a different device than the one on which they intend to use Finale.

00:10:29 Sharon Dinwiddie: Linda, welcome to HMA! Thank you for becoming our leader.
00:11:07 Sharon Dinwiddie: We need to help more people learn about our art.
00:14:50 Linda Onorevole: Choose “View Speaker” to see Jason’s snazzy set-up!
00:16:00 Eileen Raycroft: Do you need 88 keys for handbell music? are there smaller keyboards?
00:18:34 Ellie Hodder: What is the plugin?
00:21:29 Christy Glynn: So you are using the deck to program your favorite edit tools rather than use the embedded menu options. Correct?
00:22:25 Eileen Raycroft: Is it like recording a macro?
00:22:26 Sharon Dinwiddie: “Macros”
00:23:06 Christy Glynn: Any deck or only certain brands for compatibility with Finale?
00:25:35 Eileen Raycroft: You have to jerry-rig so your complete staff line is empty, right?
00:34:38 Eileen Raycroft: I did that in the beginning . . .
00:37:16 Ellie Hodder: Is the UWLUA plug in cross platform?
00:37:23 Sharon Dinwiddie: Maybe take it up less than a full octave by changing the key?
00:39:19 Sharon Dinwiddie: Oh, the people-factor constraints of bell groups!
00:39:20 dp: What about making more use of the layering options and hiding rests for that layer’s rhythm.
00:40:27 Joyce Laidlaw: option to write it all in treble w leger lines?
00:42:37 Eileen Raycroft: Nice!
00:42:37 Sharon Dinwiddie: (Please scroll up a bit?)
00:49:27 Sharon Dinwiddie: Will it move the layer for only the span highlighted?
00:53:43 Eileen Raycroft: Thank you so much!
00:54:17 Eileen Raycroft: Yes, Sharon! I have elderly and disabled folks in my bell choir, so lots of constraints that tax the creativity.
00:54:26 J: Jetstream Finale Controller
00:57:10 Pat M: Sorry, I came in late… did you explain how to do quick zoom in close for tweaking the notes? Also did you show hiding unneeded lines at beginning, middle, and end of a piece? If so, I’ll see when I watch later.
00:58:13 Christy Glynn: You are a pro at this. For a Newbie, is introducing a piece collaborative with the ringers for feedback on potential trouble spots may miss? You mentioned your “editor” in an earlier session. Should I make it a best practice to have another director preview my attempts before introduction in a rehearsal or just go bold?
00:58:18 Pat M: Thanks!
01:02:20 J: twitch.tv/BellComposer
01:03:13 Janelle Bolt: You reviewed one for me as well
01:03:15 Diane Barnes: I have found the comments very very useful to improve the piece
01:03:27 Janelle Bolt: helped me greatly
01:03:39 Christy Glynn: I’m not thin skinned, simply wanting to grow. Thank you!
01:04:07 Janelle Bolt: just watching every week has helped me
01:04:52 Christy Glynn: I work with a school inclusion program. How do I color notes for those with visual/motor needs, for ringer success/inclusion?
01:07:19 Christy Glynn: Is it easier just to print and highlight? I’m ok with such hacks.
01:07:43 Christy Glynn: Soory, Jason!
01:08:06 Christy Glynn: No urgency.
01:08:20 Christy Glynn: [email protected]
01:08:48 Erin Gerecke: I am being a fly on the wall. Thanks, Jason! ????
01:09:24 Diane Barnes: that is my go to
01:09:26 Sharon Dinwiddie: How to join Frustrated Friends?
01:09:39 Sharon Dinwiddie: Thank you
01:09:59 Linda Onorevole: thank you Jason!
01:10:14 Ellie Hodder: Thanks, Jason.
01:10:25 Sharon Dinwiddie: You are a great presenter for Finale. Thank you!
01:10:29 Eileen Raycroft: Thank you so much for your help and knowledge sharing!
01:10:33 Christy Glynn: Thank you so much!
