Conducting
Session 2 of 2
Sunday, January 30, 2022 • 4:30 PM EST
Instructor: Ed Rollins
In this two-part track, we will cover the basics of conducting; body position, beat patterns, ictus, and using a baton. Then we will go beyond, “floor – door – window – ceiling” to focus on the intangibles of conducting; musicianship, expression, and ensemble. We will cover how you as the conductor can lead your ensemble as far more than a talking metronome.

00:27:03 Samantha Strasser: My group in particular has a lot of ringers that are also teachers. Sometimes this is great! Sometimes…there’s too many cooks in the kitchen, if you catch my drift. What’s a good way to manage that balance?
00:30:23 Christy Glynn: Precious!
00:32:23 Kathy: in a church setting, we always begin with devotion and we pray for each other
00:33:45 Frances Newell: So can you motivate them to let the magic of what the piece is about unite them?
00:42:45 Christy Glynn: Regarding relationship building…often do your groups socialize together? Does it happen organically or do you have a social “chair” or do you organize social opportunities yourself? How often?
00:46:10 Carol Stratemeyer: have a setup time and then a start ringing time. if people don’t come to set up they can tear down.
00:46:35 Samantha Strasser: Can you assign people to separate set up and tear down teams?
00:47:01 Christy Glynn: Would a Sign-Up Genius schedule help? Per date a certain number of members commit to be there. The public accountability is objective that way and they can be responsible to tap another member to cover if they cannot come early that date. Would that possibly work? Just an idea.
00:49:37 Kim Braswell: https://www.signupgenius.com/
00:50:20 Christy Glynn: It sends reminders automatically to email addresses as well. Thank you, Kim.
00:50:35 Kim Braswell: 🙂
00:52:44 Susan Butler: Thanks Kim!
01:03:21 Frances Newell: Do your ringers ever accelerate or ritard without you and if so, how do you get them back?
01:09:20 Frances Newell: YES, How do you communicate VOLUME?dynamics. especially if they differ in some sections?
01:11:45 Frances Newell: What else can you use your left hand to indicate?
01:12:35 Liz Peters: what can you do to indicate handbell specific gestures: shake, vibrate mart, etc.
01:15:29 Kathy: Thank you Ed – this was very helpful
01:15:41 Christy Glynn: Thank you, Ed! I feel more confident and equipped now.
01:15:54 Susan Butler: Thank you Ed!
01:16:16 Brenda Mears: thank you
