Conducting
Session 1 of 2
Saturday, January 29, 2022 • 3:45 PM EST
Instructor: Ed Rollins
In this two-part track, we will cover the basics of conducting; body position, beat patterns, ictus, and using a baton. Then we will go beyond, “floor – door – window – ceiling” to focus on the intangibles of conducting; musicianship, expression, and ensemble. We will cover how you as the conductor can lead your ensemble as far more than a talking metronome.
00:15:13 Brenda Mears: no
00:15:18 Liz Peters: a few lessons
00:15:18 Christy Glynn: Never.
00:15:29 Jan Nyhus: not a chance
00:15:35 Christy Glynn: I was the accompanist for conducting classes.
00:15:54 Christy Glynn: I am a ringer.
00:15:56 Carol Stratemeyer: yes
00:16:06 Jan Nyhus: I inherited a bell choir. I am conducting a bell choir.
00:16:11 Christy Glynn: I’ve been tapped and I’m nervous.
00:16:49 Janis Jang: Our music director moved to another state and I’m leading the group. ;(
00:24:34 Jan Nyhus: I don’t have a mic. Sorry.
00:25:03 Carol Stratemeyer: problem solving
00:25:09 Brenda Mears: teacher
00:25:35 Jan Nyhus: I was told when I inherited our choir. I was to keep our bell choir going and I have for 13 years.
00:28:11 Frances Newell: So how do you project authority and give clear signals?
00:30:03 Christy Glynn: Firing someone from a ministry music group is so hard. Tips welcome.
00:30:52 Greig Ashurst: Please mute when you are not speaking.
00:31:14 Samantha Strasser: My director will stop and point out melody/harmony lines, and make certain sections play (i.e. “only treble clef stems down play, everyone else air bell”)
00:54:06 Frances Newell: TEMPI! I like to hear the bells’ OVERTONES! Don’t ring so fast that you can’t hear the full bell sound!
00:54:58 Christy Glynn: Good point…one of the unique aspects of the instrument that should be on display!
01:10:52 Christy Glynn: Scores should be open to interpretation based on conductor insight and group dynamics, yes?
01:13:36 Jan Nyhus: I have had to remind my masked groups that you, their emotions also show in their eyes.
